Oaxaca is a charming small Mexican city, surrounded by mountains and supported by tourism attracted by its arts and crafts and Zapotec and Mixtec ruins.

We focused on the crafts, with a half dozen visits to artisans in surrounding villages. We saw black pottery, rug weaving, celebratory candlemaking, wide loom weaving, backstrap weaving, and the carving and painting of elaborate animal statuettes.

I had the late afternoons to wander the low, colorful city center, punctuated by parades and street art.

And so my images offer a selection of the people in the streets and the artisans with their arts.
